Glass insulators demonstrate a series of advantages over ceramic insulators in the initial years of production and operation:

Due to the high mechanical strength of the glass insulator's surface, it is less prone to cracking. The electrical strength of glass generally remains constant throughout its operational life and its aging process is much slower than porcelain. Therefore, glass insulators are primarily retired due to self-damage, which occurs within the first year of operation, whereas defects in porcelain insulators are only discovered after several years of operation.

Glass insulators can eliminate the need for regular preventive tests on live insulators during operation. This is because any damage to the tempered glass will cause the insulator to fail, making it easily detectable during routine maintenance inspections. When an insulator is damaged, glass fragments near the steel cap and iron foot are trapped, and the remaining mechanical strength of the insulator is sufficient to prevent the string of insulators from breaking off. The rate of glass insulator breakage is one of the important quality indicators for product quality and serves as a quality basis for bidding and tendering in transmission engineering projects.
