The Essence and Scope of Modern Warehousing

Modern warehousing is a logistics activity that effectively plans, executes, and controls the movement, inventory, processing, packaging, sorting, and distribution of goods, as well as the associated information, with the aim of meeting the needs of the upstream and downstream of the supply chain, relying on warehouse facilities and information technology.

Four Basic Characteristics of Modern Warehousing:

(1) Dynamic Management: Traditional warehousing primarily involves static management of warehouses and goods, with the more storage, the better. Modern warehousing, on the other hand, focuses on dynamic management of products, with the core being the control of inventory levels. The less stored goods, the better, and the higher the frequency and speed of goods entering and exiting the warehouse, the better.

增值服务. Traditional warehousing services are limited to storage management, while modern warehousing services are multi-functional, integrated, and value-added.

(3) Mechanization and Automation in Operations. Traditional warehousing relies heavily on manual labor, while modern warehousing predominantly employs mechanized operations, with automation also integrated.

(4) Information Management. Traditional warehousing management is ledger + pile cards; modern warehousing utilizes computer information systems (WMS).

Public Warehouse (Service-oriented Storage): Self-built or rented warehouses, providing storage management and value-added services for a wide range of industrial and commercial enterprises.

Self-Storage: Leases storage units of various sizes to individuals or small and medium-sized enterprises, providing environmental and security measures, with customers managing the items within the storage themselves.

Warehouse Leasing (Real Estate Storage): Self-built warehouse offering warehouse leasing and related services; no warehousing services provided.

Financial warehousing (commonly referred to as "mobile property pledge supervision" domestically, and "collateral management" internationally): Activities of supervision or monitoring conducted by public warehousing companies or collateral management companies on behalf of lending institutions over the pledged inventory.

The typical model of modern warehousing, which embodies the four fundamental characteristics of modern warehousing, is the public warehouse (service-based warehousing). Its typical model is various logistics distribution centers, which are the inventory control centers, processing and distribution centers, value-added service centers, and application centers for modern logistics equipment technology in logistics and supply chain management. This is fundamentally different from the distribution centers of transportation and courier companies, which are mostly "cross-docking operations" and do not possess inventory management functions.
