Motoichi稻盛's childhood, from elementary school through college graduation and into the workforce, was marked by constant misfortune. He was in third grade of elementary school when the war broke out, and by the time it ended, he was in the first year of junior high school.

His hometown of Kagoshima was burned to a wilderness during the air raids, and his family of eight lived in a makeshift shelter with extreme poverty.

He grew up in adversity during his teenage years, and after finally stepping into society, he thought life would be easy. However, he ended up working for a failing, dilapidated company. He truly felt helpless about it, always complaining. There were a total of five university graduates who joined the company with him, and they would gather to complain before lunchtime.

He complained, "It's not feasible to keep working at this lousy company, I should quit sooner." However, he couldn't find a job. The company had好不容易 hired him, and there was nowhere else to go for him to resign.

As autumn approached, four of his colleagues resigned from the company, leaving him as the sole remaining employee with nowhere to turn. Amidst his complaints, he pondered: he had to find a way to survive at this company.

At that time, the company was planning to initiate the research and development of new precision ceramics for future growth, and this crucial R&D task was entrusted to him, a newly graduated college student.

He thought, it's no way to always grumble and complain every day, especially when the company fails to pay salaries on the designated pay day.

So, he diligently embarked on his research endeavors in a primitive lab, devoid of even decent research equipment, as if all worldly troubles had vanished. He brought pots, pans, and utensils from his dormitory, living and eating in the lab, fully immersed in his research work.

Later, he began to find the research work increasingly interesting. Due to this enjoyment, the research progressed smoothly, and the published results were praised, earning him accolades within the company. Consequently, he realized the value of his work. Previously, he had been complaining, but now he has transformed, becoming positive and cheerful, and has started to focus wholeheartedly on his research. This has led to the creation of better products, and his research has truly breathed new life into the company that was on the brink of bankruptcy.
