Surface Treatment

Before applying the FRP corrosion protection treatment, surface treatment of the base material is required. The purpose of this step is to remove dirt, grease, oxides, and other substances that may affect the adhesion of the coating. Common surface treatment methods include sandblasting, shot blasting, acid washing, and mechanical polishing. These methods not only clean the surface but also increase the surface area of the base material, thereby enhancing the adhesion of the coating.

Undercoat painting

Primer is the foundation of the glass fiber corrosion-resistant coating, primarily serving to enhance the adhesion between the coating and the substrate, and to provide basic corrosion protection. The choice of primer should be determined by the type of substrate and the usage environment. For instance, if the substrate is steel, commonly used primers include epoxy zinc-rich primer or epoxy iron red primer. During the application of the primer, attention should be given to the coating thickness and uniformity to ensure effective corrosion protection.

Surfaces Paint Coating

Face paint serves as the last line of defense in the anti-corrosion coating of fiberglass, primarily protecting the primer from environmental erosion and providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The selection of face paint should be based on the usage environment and aesthetic requirements. For instance, in marine environments, a face paint with excellent salt fog resistance should be chosen; if a vibrant color is desired, the corresponding colored face paint should be selected. Just like with the primer, attention must be given to the coating's thickness and uniformity during application.

Furthermore, to enhance the corrosion resistance of glass fiber reinforced plastics, a multi-layer coating method can be employed. For instance, adding one or more intermediate coatings between the primer and topcoat, such as epoxy iron oxide intermediate paint or polyester intermediate paint. Multi-layer coating not only improves the corrosion resistance of the coating but also enhances its aesthetics and service life.
