How to Extend the Lifespan of Turbulent Aeration Devices?

    2025-04-22

Short lifespan of a swirl aeration system may be caused by various factors. Here are some methods to extend its lifespan:

    Proper Selection and Installation

    • Thoughtful SelectionBased on the characteristics of the wastewater, the treatment volume, the treatment process, and the actual conditions such as the depth and shape of the pond, select the appropriate specifications and materials for the vortex aeration device. For example, when treating industrial wastewater with high concentrations of acids and alkalis, aeration devices made of corrosion-resistant ceramics or special plastics should be chosen; for wastewater ponds with large treatment volumes, select models with high air volume and oxygen transfer efficiency to prevent the aeration device from shortening its lifespan due to long-term overloading.
    • Proper InstallationInstall the aeration device strictly according to the product installation manual. Ensure the aeration device is installed accurately and securely, avoiding any mechanical damage during installation. Additionally, maintain even spacing between aeration devices to achieve uniform aeration and prevent localized over- or under-aeration, which can affect the lifespan of the aeration device.

    Key Operations Management Points

    • Control Operating Parameters
    • Aeration VolumeIn accordance with wastewater treatment process requirements, precisely control the aeration volume to avoid excessive or insufficient levels. Over-aeration can lead to excessive stretching, wear, and even rupture of the aeration blower diaphragm; insufficient aeration may cause impurities in the wastewater to settle on the aeration blower surface, affecting aeration performance and lifespan. Generally, aeration volume can be controlled by adjusting the air flow and pressure of the fan to ensure the aeration blower operates within the designated air volume range.
    • Aeration TimeProperly set the aeration time to avoid continuous, uninterrupted operation of the aeration device. Appropriate intermittent aeration allows the device time for self-recovery and cleaning, reducing membrane fatigue and clogging. For instance, in the activated sludge treatment process, intermittent aeration can be employed, adjusting the ratio of aeration time to rest time based on water quality and treatment outcomes.
    • Water TemperatureKeep a close watch on the temperature of the wastewater and aim to control it within an appropriate range. Generally, the ideal operating temperature for a vortex aeration system is between 5℃ and 35℃. Excessive temperatures can accelerate the aging and corrosion of the aeration material, while low temperatures can make the aeration membrane hard and brittle, prone to cracking. When the water temperature falls outside the optimal range, take appropriate measures to adjust, such as adding cooling facilities during summer heatwaves and implementing insulation measures during winter cold spells.
    • Prevent Clogging and Scaling
    • Pre-treatmentEnhancing the preliminary treatment of wastewater, removing large particles, suspended solids, and oils, etc., to prevent their entry into the aeration system and clogging the aeration equipment. Pre-treatment devices such as grates, sedimentation basins, and flotation tanks can be utilized to initially treat the wastewater.
    • Routine backwashingRegular backwashing of the aeration equipment is performed to remove dirt and impurities adhering to its surface. The frequency of backwashing can be determined based on the quality of the wastewater and the operational status of the aeration equipment, typically occurring once a week or every two weeks. During backwashing, air backflushing, water backflushing, or a combination of both can be employed to achieve better cleaning results.
    • Chemical CleaningWhen the aeration device is severely clogged and the backwashing effect is poor, chemical cleaning can be employed. Select an appropriate chemical cleaning agent based on the nature of the clog. During chemical cleaning, be mindful to control the concentration of the cleaning agent and the cleaning time to prevent corrosion of the aeration device.

    Routine maintenance and inspections

    • Regular inspectionsWe have assigned a dedicated team to regularly inspect the aeration blowers. The inspection includes checking for any damage to the blowers' appearance, cracks or aging of the diaphragms, and loose connections. Any issues found are addressed promptly, with minor damages being repaired and severely damaged blowers being replaced in a timely manner.
    • Maintenance and UpkeepBased on the usage and material characteristics of the aeration devices, regular maintenance and care should be conducted. For instance, rubber membrane aeration devices can be periodically coated with anti-aging agents to extend their service life; for metal components, anti-corrosion treatments should be applied to prevent rust and corrosion.
