Polyphenylene Oxide, commonly known as PPO, is one of the world's five major general-purpose engineering plastics. It boasts high rigidity, excellent heat resistance, flame retardancy, high strength, and superior electrical properties. Additionally, PPO is wear-resistant, non-toxic, and resistant to contamination. Its dielectric constant and dielectric loss are among the lowest in engineering plastics, virtually unaffected by temperature and humidity, making it suitable for low, medium, and high-frequency electric field applications.

Cautionary Notes
Unmodified polyphenylene oxide (PPO) resins offer excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal, flame-retardant, and chemical stability properties, but they have poor solvent resistance, are prone to stress cracking in products, and have low notch impact strength. Additionally, they possess a critical weakness—high melt viscosity, which results in poor processability. Pure PPO resins cannot be molded by injection methods, significantly limiting their applications.
To overcome these drawbacks or impart new properties, various modifications have been made to PPO. These include chemical modifications (such as copolymerization, block, grafting, and crosslinking) and physical modifications (like blending, filling, reinforcement, and microcellular foaming).
