Distortion refers to the alteration of certain parts of the original sound source signal (waveforms, frequencies, etc.) after playback by an audio system. The main types of distortion in audio systems include:

Harmonic Distortion: Harmonic distortion refers to the additional harmonic components in the sound reproduction of an audio system that exceed the original signal source. These extra harmonic components are multiples or fractions of the signal source's frequency and are caused by the non-linear characteristics of the negative feedback network or amplifier. The harmonic distortion of a high-fidelity audio system should be less than 1%.

b. Intermodulation Distortion: Intermodulation distortion is also a type of nonlinear distortion. It occurs when two or more frequency components are mixed in specific proportions, causing the various frequency signals to modulate each other. After passing through playback equipment, new nonlinear signals are generated, which include the sum and difference signals between the various signals.

c. Transient Distortion: Also known as transient response, transient distortion occurs primarily when a large transient signal is suddenly applied to an amplifier, as the amplifier's response is slow, causing the signal to distort. Generally, the amplifier's ability to follow transient signals is expressed by observing whether the envelope waveform of the output signal from the playback device resembles the input square wave signal.
