Color measurement is crucial; it's a vital guarantee for process control and quality compliance. A change in the medium's color usually indicates a process issue at a certain point, such as overheating, incorrect proportions, contamination, or defects in the finished product appearance. Generally, colorimeters are used to measure color periodically by taking samples from the pipeline to the lab for visual observation or analysis. Installing a colorimeter on the pipeline allows for real-time detection of changes in the medium's color value.
Refining of hydrocarbons and chromaticity units
Refining and petrochemical industries typically use Saybolt and ASTM color units (or others) to quantify product quality. The ASTM D1500 color standard (0.0 to 8.0 ASTM) is generally used to measure the color of lubricating oils, heating oils, and diesel, specifying that each 0.5 ASTM is a grade, with a total of 16 grades. For products with lighter colors below 0.5 ASTM, the Saybolt color unit is usually employed. The ASTM D156 specifies the Saybolt color range as +30 to -16 Saybolt, which is generally used to measure the color of aviation fuel, color analyzers, aircraft fuel, kerosene, naphtha, and NGL.
