Selecting pigment carbon black can be based on coloring characteristics or physical properties. The choice of the type of carbon black for coloring is primarily determined by the required darkness of the finished product. Extremely fine pigment carbon black can achieve very high darkness levels for coloring; products like PE trash bags, plastic bags, and cable materials require only moderate darkness levels, which can be achieved with carbon black varieties with lower specific surface area and higher structure. In plastic color mixing, minor errors in the measurement and blending of carbon black can lead to significant color discrepancies. Therefore, it is advisable to use larger particle size, lower coloring strength low-pigment carbon black, which allows for slightly higher carbon black usage, smaller measurement errors, and the advantages of better dispersion and lower cost. For gray plastics, fine-grained pigment carbon black often results in a brownish gray, whereas coarse-grained pigment carbon black can produce a bluish gray.
