Nanofiltration (NF) is used to separate smaller molecular weight substances, such as inorganic salts or PUTAOTANG, and small molecular organic compounds like sucrose, from solvents. Also known as low-pressure reverse osmosis, NF represents an emerging field in membrane separation technology, with separation capabilities falling between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. It permits certain inorganic salts and some solvents to pass through the membrane, achieving the desired separation effect.
Nanofiltration is primarily used in the purification of drinking and industrial water, wastewater treatment, and concentration of valuable components in process fluids. Nanofiltration membranes are mostly derived from reverse osmosis membranes, such as CA, CTA membranes, aromatic polyamide composite membranes, and sulfonated polyether sulfone membranes, etc. However, compared to reverse osmosis, it operates at a lower pressure, hence nanofiltration is also known as "Low-Pressure Reverse Osmosis" or "Loose RO".
