Nanofiltration (NF) primarily removes solute particles with diameters around 1 nm, retaining molecules with a molecular weight of 100 to 1000. A significant characteristic of nanofiltration membranes is their charged nature, which allows them to maintain high desalination performance at low pressure and retain molecules with hundreds of molecular weights, making them effective in removing inorganic salts.

Principle of operation for the nanofiltration device:
Membrane separation is a method that utilizes the differential selectivity of the membrane to the various components in a mixture, separating, classifying, purifying, and enriching binary or multi-component gas or liquid mixtures by applying an external energy or chemical potential difference as the driving force. Membrane pores are at the nanoscale, suitable for separating solutes with molecular weights of 100 to 1000 and molecular sizes of about 1nm, which is referred to as nanofiltration (NF). The trans-membrane pressure required for NF membrane separation is generally 0.5 to 2.0 MPa, which is lower than the pressure required for reverse osmosis membranes to achieve the same osmotic energy by 0.5 to 3 MPa.MPa. Based on operating pressure and separation limits, NF can be qualitatively positioned between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, and is sometimes referred to as "low-pressure reverse osmosis" or "loose reverse osmosis."
