Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are a new type of separation membrane that falls between Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Due to their structural characteristics such as nanoscale pore sizes and multiple charges on the membrane surface, they are primarily used in the following aspects:

Separation of organic substances with different molecular weights

(2) Separation of organic matter from small molecular inorganic substances

(3) Separation of monovalent salts from divalent or multivalent salts in the solution;

(4) Separation of salt and its corresponding acid. This achieves the softening of drinking water and industrial water, as well as the de-colorization, concentration, separation, and recovery of the liquid material.

The retention rate for monovalent ions like Na+ and Cl- is relatively low, but it is significantly high for divalent ions such as Ca2+, Mg2+, and SO42-, as well as for small molecules (200-1000 molecular weight) like pigments, dyes, antibiotics, polypeptides, and amino acids. Moreover, the permeation rate of water through nanofiltration membranes is much faster than that through reverse osmosis membranes. Therefore, when it comes to retaining low-concentration divalent ions and solutes with molecular weights ranging from 500 to several thousand, nanofiltration is more economical than reverse osmosis.
