Forged steel gate valves are used as cutoff media, allowing full flow when fully open with minimal pressure loss. Gate valves are typically suited for applications where frequent operation is not required and the gate plate needs to be kept fully open or fully closed, and are not suitable for use as regulators or throttles. For media with high flow velocities, the gate plate may cause vibration in a partially open condition, which could damage the sealing surfaces of the gate plate and valve seat, and throttling can lead to erosion of the gate plate by the medium. The main difference in structural form lies in the type of sealing element used.
