The operating part of a manual gate valve is the gate plate, which moves perpendicular to the fluid direction. Manual gate valves can only be fully open or fully closed and are not suitable for regulating or throttling. The gate plate has two sealing surfaces. The two sealing surfaces of the more commonly used wedge gate valves form a wedge shape, with the wedge angle varying with the valve parameters, typically 5°. The gate plate of a wedge gate valve can be made as a single piece, known as a rigid gate plate; or it can be made to have slight deformability to improve its processability and compensate for deviations in the sealing surface angle during the manufacturing process, which type of gate plate is called an elastic gate plate.
When the gate valve is closed, the sealing surface can be sealed solely by the medium pressure, that is, the medium pressure pushes the sealing surface of the gate plate towards the opposite valve seat to ensure the sealing of the sealing surface, which is known as self-sealing. Most gate valves use forced sealing, meaning that when the valve is closed, external force must be applied to forcibly push the gate plate towards the valve seat to ensure the sealing integrity of the sealing surface.
A gate valve where the gate moves in a straight line along with the valve rod is called a lifting rod gate valve, also known as an exposed rod gate valve. Typically, there is a trapezoidal thread on the lifting rod, which converts the rotational motion into linear motion through the nut at the top of the valve and the guide slots on the valve body, thereby transforming the operating torque into an operating thrust. In some valves, the valve rod nut is mounted on the gate, and the handwheel rotating drives the valve rod to rotate, lifting the gate. Such valves are called rotating rod gate valves or concealed rod gate valves.
