Promptly handle sludge and solid waste; solid waste removed from the septic tank must be treated by composting or chemical methods before reuse. The extracted liquid can be used immediately. Maintain the tightness of the tank's lid; do not light fires, smoke, or do so on the shore while clearing waste or removing liquid to prevent spontaneous combustion of the digested sludge.
