Polycarbonate (PC) is a polyester of carbonic acid. Carbonic acid itself is not stable, but its derivatives (such as phosgene, urea, carbonates, and esters) are relatively stable.

Polycarbonates can be categorized into aliphatic and aromatic types based on the structure of the alcohol.

Polycarbonate esters, such as polyethylene carbonate, polytrimethylene carbonate, and their copolymers, have low melting points and glass transition temperatures, poor strength, and are not suitable for structural materials. However, their biocompatibility and biodegradability make them applicable in drug sustained-release carriers, surgical sutures, bone support materials, and other areas.

Polycarbonate is resistant to weak acids, weak bases, and neutral oils.

Polycarbonate is not resistant to ultraviolet light or strong alkalis.

PC is a linear polyester carbonate, with alternating carbonate groups and other groups in its molecule. These groups can be aromatic, aliphatic, or a combination of both. Bisphenol A-type PC is the most important industrial product.

PC is an almost colorless amorphous polymer in glassy state, with excellent optical properties. High molecular weight PC resins have high tensile strength, with a cantilever beam notch impact strength of 600~900J/m. The heat deflection temperature of unfilled grades is approximately 130°C, which can increase by 10°C after glass fiber reinforcement. The bending modulus of PC can exceed 2400MPa, allowing for the processing of large rigid products. Below 100°C, the creep rate under load is very low. PC has poor hydrolysis resistance and is not suitable for products subjected to repeated high-pressure steam.

The primary performance flaw of PC is its insufficient hydrolytic stability, sensitivity to notches, poor resistance to organic chemicals and scratches, and it yellows when exposed to UV light for extended periods. Like other resins, PC is susceptible to attack by certain organic solvents.
