A DC torque motor is a special type of brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor. Since the load is directly connected to the rotor, no transmission components are required, making the torque motor a direct drive technology. The torque motor is also known as a "frameless" motor. This means the motor lacks a housing, bearings, or measurement system. These components are selected by the machine manufacturer based on the required performance, or purchased as a complete set.

The torque motor employs a permanent magnet brushless motor design, consisting of a ring-shaped stator and a ring-shaped rotor. The stator does not use a toothed lamination design but is composed of smooth cylindrical laminations. The rotor is made up of multi-pole rare earth permanent magnet poles and a ring-shaped hollow shaft. This structure features a large air gap and uniform magnetic resistance throughout the entire working air gap, thus providing the advantage of zero-slot torque.
