A DC torque motor is a special type of brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor, as the load is directly connected to the rotor, no transmission components are required, making the torque motor a direct drive technology. The torque motor is also referred to as a "frameless" motor, meaning it lacks a housing, bearings, or measuring system. These components are selected or purchased as a set by the machine manufacturer based on the required performance.

The torque motor utilizes a permanent magnet brushless motor design, featuring a ring-shaped stator and a ring-shaped rotor. The stator does not employ a toothed lamination design but is instead composed of smooth cylindrical laminations. The rotor is made up of multi-pole rare earth permanent magnet poles and a ring-shaped hollow shaft. This structure is characterized by a large air gap, with uniform magnetic resistance throughout the entire working air gap, thus providing the motor with the advantage of zero-slot torque.
