Cranes used in shipbuilding yards and docks are tasked with handling all the necessary parts for constructing the hull, including beams, sections, steel plates, and more.

Materials are transported from ground-level conveyances to the manufacturing site. This transportation task must be completed swiftly over long distances. Consequently, the number of cranes is determined based on the entire dry dock's foundation area, ensuring that the cranes do not interfere with each other.

This crane, once widely used, is now also employed in small shipyards.

The universally used fixed-position gantry crane is a tower-type rotating crane with fixed pillars, where the trolley travels beneath the horizontal extension arm.

Due to the numerous placements of this crane around the shipyard, the decision of its rotation radius is based on the condition of being able to operate across the entire shipbuilding area.

The gate crane spans over the tracks laid along the dock, transporting parts for the shipbody. The span of the gates: mostly 6 meters. This crane sometimes features a rotating column, sometimes a fixed column, and occasionally a turntable. To change the radius of rotation, the crane extends its telescopic arm, usually below the horizontal extension arm, where a trolley is installed to alter its radius of rotation.

When adjusting the rotation radius with a racing car (steel cable racing car), the driving mechanism of the racing car and the drive mechanism of the winch are fixed at the rear of the extending arm to enhance the balancing weight effect.

To ensure the stability of the crane, a balancing weight is generally required, which is mounted on the base of the movable gantry's undercarriage.

The portable gantry crane features a telescopic boom mounted on a pillar that can move up and down. It is equipped with an eight-part pulley block for lifting and lowering operations. To prevent the boom from lowering too low, a latching device should be installed.
