TPE and TPU are both thermoplastic elastomers with rubber-like elasticity. For materials with similar hardness, TPE and TPU can sometimes be difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. However, by examining details, one can analyze the differences and distinctions between TPE and TPU from various aspects. Performance Differences:
TPU materials exhibit superior elasticity and recovery properties compared to TPE. This is primarily due to the polymer homogenous structure of TPU, which falls under the polymer resin category. In contrast, TPE materials are composed of a multi-component blend, forming a multiphase structure alloy. High-hardness TPE materials are prone to deformation during processing, while TPU materials demonstrate excellent elasticity across all hardness ranges, with products being less likely to deform. Essentially, the difference lies in their hardness levels.
Haptic Differences:
TPU material products have a rough texture with strong friction resistance, while TPE material products offer a smoother, softer feel with weaker friction properties.
Hardness (Range) Variations:
The SEBS-modified TPE boasts a wide range of adjustable hardness, varying from Shore A Scale 0 to 100, whereas the TPU hardness typically ranges between Shore 60A and Shore 70D. Currently, soft TPU with a hardness of around 45A has emerged overseas, although it is quite expensive. Consequently, the hardness range of TPE materials falls into the medium to low hardness category, while TPU materials exhibit medium to high hardness.
The Difference After the Burn
TPE materials emit a unique aromatic smell accompanied by a petroleum scent (the petroleum smell is characteristic of PP components when burned). The flame tip is yellow, while the base is blue (for ultra-soft hardness TPE, the base is yellow). When TPU materials burn, they produce a certain amount of刺激性 odor and emit a slight, crackling explosion sound during combustion.
Thermal Resistance:
TPE operates from -60°C to 105°C, while TPU ranges from -60°C to 80°C.
Oil Resistance:
TPU materials offer better oil resistance, whereas achieving oil resistance in TPE is somewhat challenging.
The Difference in Proportions:
The weight range of TPE materials is quite broad, ranging from 0.89 to 1.3, while TPU falls between 1.0 and 1.4. This is primarily due to their appearance as blends during use.
Transparency Differences:
TPU materials offer better transparency than TPE, and they are less prone to sticking than transparent TPE.
Shrinkage Rate:
TPE materials exhibit a shrinkage rate of 1.2% to 3%; TPU materials have a shrinkage rate of 0.8% to 1.8%.
