Fresco sculptures, as the name implies, are artistic pieces that combine the art of bas-relief design with mural art. They can be hung in homes or offices for decoration. Having a fresco sculpture in the home adds an artistic touch to the living environment, reflecting a high pursuit of art and a strong ability to appreciate it. Thus, those with unique insights into art often hang fresco sculptures in their homes to elevate the ambiance and beautify their living spaces. Displaying a fresco sculpture in the office showcases its artistic charm, making mundane work more artistic and providing a work-related break to enjoy art, effectively reducing stress and bringing a pleasant sensory experience. A fine fresco sculpture not only demonstrates artistic skill but also beauty. Having a fresco sculpture in the home can even enhance the room's overall style, reflecting an artful return to everyday life.
The methods for handling bas-reliefs generally fall into the following categories:
(One) High-relief sculptures have a thicker body with minimal compression and a larger distance between the point and the surface. Some ancient Chinese grottoes utilize high-relief sculptures, which are also suitable for indoor display in this form.
(II) Similar to ancient Chinese carvings like the "Six Horses of Zhao陵" and the decorative bas-reliefs of the Parthenon in Greece, these sculptures have considerable thickness yet are highly compressed, with subtle undulations and primarily operate on a single plane, with points and surfaces close together. This form of bas-relief is well-suited for architectural decoration and application on memorials.
(3) Similar to the bas-reliefs used on silver coins and medallions, the basic processing methods are the same. However, due to their smaller size and thinner construction, the points and surfaces are very close together, commonly referred to as low relief or thin relief.
(IV) Similar to the bas-reliefs on the two doors of Filippo Brunelleschi's Florence Baptistery from the Renaissance period, they feature a significant sense of perspective. Utilizing the perspective techniques of painting, there is a considerable difference in volume, thickness, and size between the figures in the foreground, those in the background, and the space between them, which is commonly referred to as perspective bas-reliefs.
Our folk bas-reliefs generally incorporate a combination of the aforementioned techniques. There are those with significant variations in thickness and height, as well as ones with minimal differences. Some are on the same plane, while others have considerable distances between the front and back, not on the same plane (such as most Dongyang wood carvings). There are those using scattered perspective and others using focal perspective. In summary, the methods of treatment are diverse and abundant.
Relief sculpture is a blend of sculpture and painting, utilizing compression techniques to handle objects and employing perspective and other factors to depict three-dimensional space, typically viewed from one or two sides. Reliefs are often attached to another plane, making them more commonly used in architecture and frequently seen on utilitarian objects. Due to their compressed nature, they occupy less space and are suitable for decoration in various environments. In recent years, they have taken on an increasingly significant role in urban beautification. Reliefs are as diverse in content, form, and material as round sculptures, with materials including stone, wood, ivory, and metal. They come in several forms such as niche-style, high relief, low relief, incised line, and镂空. Although relief murals are very beautiful works of art, how many people know how to properly care for them? Without maintenance, relief murals lose much of their aesthetic appeal, making regular care essential!
