How to Repair Fiberglass Tanks?

Although fiberglass has superior performance, with good hardness and corrosion resistance, it may still leak due to various reasons. Once damaged, most fiberglass tanks are typically replaced rather than repaired, as fixing them is quite difficult. Usually, they are restored using adhesive bonding or hot welding methods. Here, we briefly introduce the adhesive bonding repair method.

(1) Clean fiberglass. Firstly, remove the damaged tank, clean it thoroughly, and dry it to prepare for repairs.

(2) Carefully cut larger glass fiber cloth according to the damaged area, then bake to remove wax and heat until no smoke is produced, being cautious not to fold.

(3) Gluing. There are many formulations for the adhesive liquid, but typically, you pour equal parts of epoxy resin and polyamide resin into a wide-mouth container in a 1:1 ratio, stir thoroughly with a stick until well blended. The viscosity should be such that when you lift the stick, it doesn't leave a string. Be mindful to follow the principle of "less is more," and don't make too much at once; just enough to use up. Additionally, if the mixture isn't stirred evenly, the adhesive will solidify on its own over time, leading to waste.

(4) Gluing: First, use a stiff-bristled brush to apply a layer of adhesive to the inner surface of the glass-fiber tank. Then, place the prepared glass cloth on the adhesive surface and gently press it to ensure a tight fit and allow the adhesive to渗透 through the glass cloth. Once the first layer is fully soaked, apply another layer of adhesive and attach another layer of glass cloth. Repeat this process a few times, being careful not to apply the adhesive too thickly during the process.

After applying the coating, find a locally warmer area to allow for curing. Although the curing process takes longer, avoid using open flames for baking. Once cured, sand down the edges and holes, then paint, and the repair is complete, making the fiberglass tank sturdy again.
