The principle of deicing salt in melting snow is primarily based on its ability to lower the freezing point of water.
1️⃣ When de-icers (such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, etc.) are spread on the snow surface, they dissolve quickly in the微量 moisture within the snow layers, forming a salt solution. This process penetrates deep into the snow through osmosis, increasing the moisture content within the snow layers, creating salty snowwater.
2️⃣ Due to the fact that the freezing point of a salt solution is significantly lower than that of pure water, this property allows salted snowmelt to remain in a liquid state at lower temperatures, thereby accelerating the melting of snow layers.
As the melting process progresses, the de-icer spreads continuously throughout the surrounding snow layers, creating a wider melting area until the entire snow layer is completely melted. Additionally, the de-icer can further absorb moisture from the air through its hygroscopic action, accelerating the melting process of the snow layers. Therefore, de-icer plays a crucial role in winter road snow removal and airport runway maintenance.
