Preservative-treated wood decks are commonly found in scenic areas and parks, and the quality of preservative wood on the market varies greatly. How can one differentiate the quality of a preservative wood deck? Let's take a brief look together below!
1. Check for relevant qualifications certificates
Examine the pressure-treated wood quality certificate to see if there are any wood samples accompanied by inspection reports, ensuring the quality is guaranteed.
2. Inspecting the Quality of Wood Processing
Standard consistency, minimal errors, and excellent processing quality. One can visually inspect the wood for standardization, with minimal discrepancies. Generally, for thinner boards, the error should be less than 0.5-1mm; for larger, more standardized materials, the overall error should not exceed 2mm.
Generally, materials processed off the production line are standardized and mostly accurate, while those handcrafted have significant discrepancies, leading to construction challenges. For planed materials, it is essential to inspect the quality of the surface finish, aiming for a smooth and natural appearance.
3. Stability of Wood Preservatives
The smaller the color change of the wood when soaked in water, the better the preservative stability. Taking samples of different preservative-treated wood (with the same standard and moisture content), soaking them in the same volume of clear water at the same temperature for the same duration, the preservative with less color change in the water exhibits better stability.
This is not an accurate method either; there may also be certain differences in the concentration of preservatives used. After treatment, due to the varying stability of different preservatives, their stability within the wood can differ significantly after pressurization. Using substandard preservatives does not significantly improve the wood's preservative properties; instead, it can pose severe potential hazards.
4. View Wood Preservation and Pressure Treatment
Edge wood should be fully immersed in preservative, and a clean, even surface is preferable. A better quality indication is when the preservative is completely soaked into the edge wood as seen from the wood's cross-section!
5. Source Material Quality
The finer the annual rings in wood, the better the material generally is. Dense annual rings indicate slow growth of the wood, and wood that appears less "chaffy" when cut should be of higher quality.
