With the rapid development of society and the improvement of people's living standards, many things are improving for the better. However, what remains unchanged, in my opinion, is the cotton quilt we use every day. From our grandparents to us, every household has a cotton quilt, but it's just one quilt. Not airing it for three months can really lead to the proliferation of 6 million dust mites. This statement is not an exaggeration.
Dust mites are microscopic pests that are hard to see with the naked eye, and they are vectors for skin diseases such as chronic urticaria, chronic asthma, and chronic allergic rhinitis, with 95% of cases being caused by them. They thrive in warm, humid environments, so to eliminate dust mites, you need to provide two essential tools: ventilation and light.
After waking up in the morning, do not immediately fold the quilt. Turn the side that has been in contact with your body over and spread it out on the bed. Then, open the windows at home for ventilation to reduce the humidity of the quilt.
On cloudy days or when the weather is cold, it's not convenient to go out and sun our bedding. We can use electric heaters or electric heating pads at home to warm and dry the bedding, ensuring that mites cannot survive during the damp season.
During sleep, the human body automatically sweats, and the absorbency of the bedding determines the quality of our sleep. Everyone has experienced the discomfort of sweating after a cold, where the body's sweat is not fully absorbed by the bedding, leaving one feeling clammy and restless. Therefore, the moisture-wicking and sweat-evacuating properties of the bedding are also crucial.
Ensure the cotton quilt is exposed to direct sunlight for at least two consecutive days. While sunning, alternate the sides of the quilt to ensure thorough drying and kill any mites.
All cotton duvets are recommended to be used with covers or protective layers. This way, only the covers need to be cleaned during washing. When storing the duvets, avoid placing heavy items on top as prolonged pressure can alter the shape of the duvet, diminish material elasticity, reduce fluffiness and hand feel, and affect its warmth-retaining properties. Additionally, adding a desiccant can help maintain the duvet's dryness during storage.
