5 Uses Editing

Leverage its-268.9°C low boiling point, liquid helium is used for ultra-low temperature cooling. It is indispensable in the application of superconductors, which are of great interest in fields like maglev trains. Additionally, due to its inert chemical properties and lighter than air characteristic, helium is commonly used as the filling gas in spacecraft or advertising balloons, a well-known use. It is widely applied in the fields of respiratory mixed gases for marine development and in the cooling of superconducting electromagnets for nuclear magnetic resonance imaging equipment: scientific research, petrochemicals, refrigeration, semiconductors, pipeline leak detection, superconducting experiments, metal manufacturing, deep-sea diving, high-precision welding, and the production of optoelectronic products. It can be used as a low-temperature cooling source and in superconducting technology. It can also serve as a leak detector for high-vacuum devices, nuclear reactors, spacecraft, and as a protective gas for welding metals like magnesium, zirconium, aluminum, and titanium. It is used as a pressurized gas for transporting liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in rockets and spacecraft. It also serves as a cleaning agent for nuclear reactors, a carrier gas for gas chromatography analysis, for inflating balloons, as a protective gas for arc welding, as a mixed gas for diving, and as the filling gas for gas thermometers. Moreover, due to its excellent permeability and non-flammability, helium is applied in the vacuum leak detection industry, such as helium mass spectrometry leak detectors.

Safety Matters Editor

1. Pressure is typically 15MPa. Before use, reduce pressure using a regulator such as YQY-12 or 152IN-125, and inspect the gas pipeline for leaks with soap and water prior to operation to ensure there are no gas leaks.

2. Ensure helium is not leaking and that the workplace is well-ventilated. When helium levels increase, causing oxygen levels to drop below 19.5%, patients first exhibit rapid breathing, lack of concentration, and ataxia. Subsequently, they may experience fatigue, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, coma, seizures, and ultimately death.

3. Upon reaching the end of the helium gas, the residual pressure in the cylinder should be maintained at 0.5 MPa, with the minimum not less than 0.25 MPa. The cylinder valve should be closed to ensure gas quality and usage safety.

4. Bottled helium should be classified and stacked for transportation, storage, and use. It must be kept away from open flames and heat sources. Ensure it is not near fire, oil, or wax, not exposed to sunlight, not dropped heavily, and not impacted. It is strictly prohibited to arc or spark on the gas cylinder. Rough handling is forbidden. For short-distance movement of helium cylinders, a hand truck for cylinders should be used. For long-distance transport, a hazardous goods vehicle is required. Liquid helium has a temperature of -268.9°C and can cause severe frostbite upon contact with the skin. [3]

5. The storage cylinders for helium must be used and inspected in accordance with the "Regulations for Gas Cylinder Safety Supervision" of the National Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. The filling pressure of the gas cylinders must not exceed the specified pressure. The safety helmet must be worn at all times to protect the gas valve. The gas cylinders should be inspected every three years (exceptions for special circumstances), including external inspections and hydrostatic tests. Only after passing the test can they continue to be used, and inspections are conducted at the filling facility.
