5 Applications Editing

Utilizing its low boiling point of -268.9°C, liquid helium is used for ultra-cold cooling. It is indispensable in superconductor applications, such as maglev trains, which have garnered widespread attention. Moreover, due to its inactive chemical properties and lighter-than-air nature, helium is commonly used as a filling gas in spacecraft or advertising balloons, a use well-known to all. In the field of marine development, helium is widely employed in breathing mixtures and for cooling superconducting electromagnets in MRI equipment. Its applications span various fields: scientific research, petrochemicals, refrigeration, semiconductors, pipeline leak detection, superconducting experiments, metal manufacturing, deep-sea diving, high-precision welding, and the production of optoelectronic products. It can serve as a low-temperature cooling source and in superconducting technology. It is also used as a leak detector in high-vacuum devices, nuclear reactors, spacecraft, and as a protective gas for welding magnesium, zirconium, aluminum, titanium, and other metals. It acts as a pressurized gas for transporting liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in rockets and spacecraft. It is also used as a cleaning agent in nuclear reactors, as a carrier gas in gas chromatography analysis, for inflating balloons, as a protective gas for arc welding, as a mixture for diving, and as the filling gas for gas thermometers. Additionally, due to its good permeability and non-flammability, helium is applied in the vacuum leak detection industry, such as in helium mass spectrometers.

Safety Matters Editor

1. Pressure is typically 15MPa, and it should be reduced using a regulator like YQY-12 or 152IN-125 before use. Before operation, check for gas leaks in the pipeline with soapy water to ensure there are no gas leaks.

2. Ensure helium is not leaking and the workplace is well-ventilated. When helium levels increase causing oxygen levels to drop below 19.5%, patients first experience rapid breathing, lack of concentration, and ataxia. Subsequently, symptoms may include fatigue, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, coma, seizures, and ultimately death.

3. When a helium cylinder is nearly empty, the residual pressure inside should be maintained at 0.5 MPa, with a minimum of 0.25 MPa. The cylinder valve should be closed to ensure gas quality and safety of use.

4. Bottled helium should be stored and handled separately, away from open flames and heat sources. It should be kept away from fire, oil, wax, direct sunlight, heavy drops, and impacts. It is strictly prohibited to perform arc or electrical arc operations on the gas cylinder. Rough handling is forbidden. For short-distance movement, a cylinder handcart should be used for helium cylinders, while for long-distance transportation, a hazardous materials transport vehicle should be employed. Liquid helium has a temperature of -268.9°C, and contact with the skin can cause severe frostbite. [3]

5. The storage cylinders for helium must be used and inspected in accordance with the "Regulations for Gas Cylinder Safety Supervision" of the National Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau. The filling pressure of the gas cylinders must not exceed the specified pressure. The safety helmet must be worn at all times to protect the gas valve. The gas cylinders should be inspected every three years (exceptions for special circumstances), including external inspections and hydrostatic tests. Only after passing the tests can they continue to be used, and inspections are conducted at the filling facility.
