Lighting: Aquatic plants have a high demand for light, as sufficient lighting can promote plant growth and flowering. During daily maintenance, care should be taken in well-lit locations, and even in summer, ensure adequate sunlight exposure while also guaranteeing sufficient light.
Water: Sufficient water is essential for the growth of aquatic plants. Take lotus flowers as an example; during the growing season, a water layer of 3~5cm is maintained, with more than two waterings a day in summer, and moist soil during the dormant period. In daily maintenance, water is also changed regularly to ensure the cleanliness of the water quality.
Potting Soil: The pots and soil used for aquatic plants differ greatly from those for other plants; pots cannot have holes at the bottom. In terms of soil, pond mud is used for cultivation, and garden soil can be mixed with water to form a thin mud for storage, providing a better growth environment for the plants.
Fertilization: Aquatic plants require proper nutrients for growth. Appropriate organic fertilizers ensure ample base fertilization, with daily maintenance focusing on phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, supplemented by nitrogen fertilizers. During the growing season, a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer can be applied to promote plant growth, and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied before and after flowering to encourage blooming.
Temperature: Aquatic plants also have certain temperature requirements. For instance, elodea prefers a warm water environment with an ideal temperature range of 20-25 degrees Celsius. During the cold season, measures must be taken to maintain the stability of both water and room temperatures to prevent the elodea from freezing to death.2
Water Quality: Water quality is also crucial for the growth of aquatic plants. Goldfish plants thrive in clear river water or tap water, with an ideal pH range of 6.5-7.5. During the cultivation process, it's essential to avoid deterioration of water quality by regularly changing fresh water and maintaining a balanced level of nutrient salts.
Space: Aquatic plants require ample space to grow. If the container is too small, it can lead to slow growth or wilting. Therefore, when selecting a container, it's important to choose one that is appropriate for the number and size of the plants.
By paying attention to and maintaining these key points, the aquatic plants can thrive healthily and robustly.
