The Rockwell hardness tester determines the hardness of high-pressure boiler pipes by measuring the depth of penetration of a diamond into the metal; the greater the penetration depth, the lower the hardness. The depth of penetration of the diamond into the metal can be read from the pointer, which indicates the correct number, known as the Rockwell hardness number. Hardening (also known as quenching) involves uniformly heating high-pressure boiler pipes to an appropriate temperature and then rapidly immersing them in water or oil to cool them quickly, or cooling them in air or a freezing zone, to achieve the desired hardness.
