Coal-based granular activated carbon, as an adsorbent, boasts strong adsorption properties, high mechanical strength, good purification efficiency, ease of regeneration, and low cost. It is widely used in industries, agriculture, technology, and people's daily lives, having become an indispensable important raw material in the national economy's industrial sector.

Xylitol products are primarily made from agricultural by-products such as corn cobs and sugarcane bagasse, utilizing processes like hydrolysis, purification, evaporation, crystallization, centrifugation, and drying. They are widely used in the food and confectionery industries. Since xylitol is extracted from plant materials, it often contains various pigments like melanin and caramel color, which severely affect the selection of production process criteria and the quality of the product. These pigments must be removed.

Shell activated carbon technology has been widely used in modern sugar industry, however, most sugar factories use powdered activated carbon for decolorization and purification of sugar syrup, which leads to operational failures, severe environmental pollution, difficult waste carbon recovery, and regeneration challenges. Additionally, powdered activated carbon has a significant adsorption effect on sugar, causing sugar loss and resulting in higher operating costs.

Coconut Shell Activated Carbon is a solid granular adsorption material, primarily with mesoporous structures in cylindrical and V-shaped pores. It is mainly produced from coconut shell, with the addition of chemicals such as phosphates, offering high adsorption capacity, easy regeneration, strong resistance to pollution, robust resistance to liquid flow, and minimal loss. Due to its reasonable pore size distribution and unique pore shape, it is highly effective in adsorbing various pigment ions and forming chemical bonds.

Chemically produced chitosan activated carbon is utilized to decolorize the sugar liquid during xylose removal process. The transmittance of the decolorized sugar solution exceeds 70%, fully meeting production requirements. Additionally, the decolorization by fruit shell activated carbon simplifies the production process, reduces the labor intensity of workers, and cuts down production costs, truly achieving the goal of a continuous process and simple operation. Experimental results indicate that fruit shell activated carbon can completely replace powdered activated carbon in the sugar industry.
