A sieve plate extractor is a liquid-liquid extraction unit, with the sieve plate being the main structure inside the tower. The light phase (dispersed phase) is introduced at the bottom of the sieve plate extractor, dispersed through the sieve holes, and then rises in the heavy phase (continuous phase). It accumulates as a layer of light liquid beneath the next sieve plate, before being dispersed again and re-aggregating. The dispersion process is the mass transfer in extraction, with the extract phase and raffinate phase obtained at the top and bottom of the tower, respectively.
