How much do you know about the basics of stainless steel LNG tanks?

Stainless steel LNG tanks are made of tempered material, boasting strong resistance to acidity and alkalinity, and are designed to meet customer satisfaction based on the influence of external environments on the storage. They are highly popular in both daily life and public venues. These tanks are primarily composed of natural gas pretreatment processes, liquefaction processes, storage procedures, control systems, and fire protection systems, avoiding the drawbacks of outdated storage tanks, and are a new, satisfactory product.


Stainless steel LNG tanks are primarily containers for storing liquefied natural gas, mainly used in household kitchens, automotive fuel, and chemical plants. These tanks come in various sizes for convenience, allowing users to choose according to their specific needs. Generally, tanks ranging from 5 to 50 cubic meters are suitable for residential use or gas stations. Tanks from 50 to 100 cubic meters are commonly used for satellite liquefaction units and large-scale industrial applications. These LNG tanks possess different characteristics that cater to installations in various regions, greatly enhancing our daily lives.


Insulation method for the protective structure of the lng tank

  

1. The true Chinese powder insulation method involves vacuuming the sandwich layer of the LNG tank and filling it with powder (tungsten sand), commonly used in small LNG tanks. Vacuum powder insulated tanks are popular due to their production technology being similar to that of liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen tanks, with domestic manufacturers' production techniques now well-established. LNG tanks are relatively easy and flexible to operate and maintain, making them widely used. The majority of large-scale LNG liquefaction stations in China use 50m3 and 100m3 cylindrical double-metal vacuum powder insulated LNG tanks. Currently, sizes up to 200m3 are possible, but due to their large volume, transportation is challenging and they are less commonly used. Vacuum powder insulated tanks are also available in spherical shapes, typically ranging from 200 to 1500m3, but the installation of these spherical tanks is more difficult on-site.

  

2. Positive Pressure Insulation Accumulation


Insulated with thermal materials, the sandwiched layer is nitrogen-inflated, featuring a thicker insulation layer, widely used in large and medium-sized LNG storage tanks and containers. Typically, these are vertical LNG mother-child storage tanks.

  

3. High vacuum multi-layer insulation.


High-vacuum multi-layer insulated with double-layered metal vacuum powder for LNG storage tanks, commonly used in tank trucks. The cylindrical double-metal vacuum powder LNG storage tanks are commonly used in domestic LNG gasification stations. Considering that vertical tanks save space and have a larger static head of LNG, which is beneficial for the self-increaser, vertical double-layered metal vacuum powder LNG storage tanks are adopted. The station's LNG storage capacity is not large, but the cooling performance requirements are high, thus high-vacuum multi-layer insulated storage tanks are chosen. Based on the LNG storage capacity and considering the ease of transport for modular equipment, a horizontal 50m3 storage tank is selected for LNG transfer. The LNG tank is equipped with one liquid level gauge, one differential pressure transmitter, one pressure transmitter, one temperature transmitter, and one pressure gauge to provide on-site indication and remote control of LNG level, temperature, and pressure inside the tank. Safety explosion-proof devices are installed at the top of the tank, and an intermediate layer extraction port and temperature testing port are set at the bottom. The design pressure inside the inner tank is determined to be 1.2MPa and the design pressure of the outer tank is -0.1MPa, based on the working pressure of the system and considering economic factors.


Safety Precautions for LNG Tanks


1. Safe Operation of LNG Tanks: To prevent over-temperature and over-pressure phenomena in LNG tanks, the usage pressure and temperature should be controlled. The causes of over-temperature and over-pressure in LNG tanks include the following:

(1) Operator Error To prevent operator errors, warning signs should be affixed to critical operation devices. These signs should clearly indicate the opening and closing directions, status, and precautions for valves, etc.

(2) Overfilling of Liquefied Gases Preventive measures against overfilling include: strictly filling to the specified storage volume; upon discovering overfilling, immediately attempt to remove the excess; all gauges used for filling must be regularly inspected; level gauges should be flushed periodically; any residual liquid in the container should be included in the filling volume; its weight cannot be ignored; when the surrounding temperature rises, spray cooling should be conducted.

2. Maintenance and care for LNG tanks:

1. Cylinders must be stored in well-ventilated areas, with a minimum distance of 1.5 meters from any flame or heat source. Cylinders should never be heated with fire, boiled, or left in direct sunlight. Regularly inspect the cylinder valves and pipeline joints for leaks, ensuring they remain airtight. Typically, soap water is used to check for leaks; open flames for testing are strictly prohibited.

LNG Tank Operation and Maintenance Procedures

I. LNG Unloading Procedure

Note: (Example: 1# LNG Storage Tank Inlet)

1. Inspect that the pressure gauges, level indicators, thermometers, combustible gas detectors, and safety valves on the LNG unloading platform and within the 1# LNG storage tank area are operating normally.

2. Verify that valves C-8, G1-5, G1-11, G1-13, G1-15, B-1, and B-2 are in the open position, and that valves G1-8, C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, C-5, C-6, and C-7 are closed. Check that the bolts securing the root valve of the LNG tank are tight and the flange connections are intact. Tighten immediately if any looseness is detected.

3. Prior to entering the station, the LNG tanker must raise the static electricity grounding wire. Once inside, the LNG tanker's speed must not exceed 5 kilometers per hour, and it must stop at the designated location, turn off the engine, remove the car key, pull up the handbrake, close the doors securely, place the wooden chocks properly, and connect the static electricity grounding wire. Install the LNG tanker loading and unloading hoses: 1. The LNG tanker (Xinjiang Guanghui) connects its self-pressurized liquid phase outlet to the liquid phase inlet of the vaporizer; the LNG tanker's self-pressurized vapor phase inlet connects to the vaporizer's vapor phase outlet; the LNG tanker's liquid phase outlet connects to the LNG pipeline. 2. The LNG tanker (XinAo AnRuiKe) connects its lower liquid inlet and outlet to the LNG pipeline, and the vapor phase pipeline connects to the BOG pipeline.

4. The pressure of LNG tankers should be maintained between 0.55-0.7 MPa. If the pressure of an LNG tanker falls below 0.55 MPa, the LNG tanker's self-pressurization system or the tanker loading platform's gasifier should be activated to increase pressure.

5. Open valve G1-8 to pre-cool the incoming liquid pipeline using LNG from the LNG storage tank.

6. After pre-cooling is complete, open valve C-2 and the LNG tanker discharge valve. Fill the LNG storage tank with LNG by simultaneously introducing liquid from both the bottom and top. On-site, the opening of valve C-2 is determined based on the filling rate of the No. 1 LNG storage tank.

7. When the pressure difference between the LNG tanker and the LNG storage tank is less than 0.1 MPa, open valve G1-14 to depressurize the LNG storage tank, or activate the LNG tanker's self-pressurization system or the tanker loading platform's gasifier to increase the pressure in the LNG tanker, maintaining a pressure difference of 0.2 MPa between the LNG tanker and the LNG storage tank is advisable. During the depressurization process of the LNG storage tank, the pressure after the pressure regulator should be strictly controlled and must not exceed the pressure regulator's cut-off pressure.

8. After confirming that the LNG in the LNG tank truck has been unloaded, close valve C-2 and open valve C-3 to depressurize. When the LNG tank truck is connected to the city...

The low-temperature LNG storage tank has a double-wall structure. The inner vessel stores low-temperature natural gas liquids, withstanding the pressure and low temperatures of the medium, and is made of SS30408 material. The outer shell acts as a protective layer for the inner vessel, maintaining a certain gap to form an insulating space, which bears the weight of the inner vessel and the medium as well as the vacuum negative pressure of the insulation layer. The outer shell does not come into contact with the low temperature and is made of container steel. The insulating layer is mostly filled with pearly sand and achieves a high vacuum. The evaporation rate of the low-temperature LNG storage tank is generally below 0.2%.



Low-Temperature LNG Storage Tank Structural Design


1.1 Liquid Filling System


The liquid addition is divided into top and bottom feed, with a quick connector CN-1 and a four-way connector connecting to the top feed valve V3 and the bottom feed valve V2, respectively, with pipes and transition joints leading to the inner cylinder.


Tubes are selected in φ28×2 and φ45×3.5 sizes.


1.2 Draining System


The V6 valve can be directly drained from the bottom of the cylinder; pipes are selected in φ45×3.5 size. The V6 is chosen with 32gDA25C, with specifications of DN40PN4.0.


1.3 Vacuum Degree Measurement System


VR vacuum silicon tube, used to measure the vacuum degree of the storage tank's insulation layer, connected to the evacuation pipe of the insulation layer. When the vacuum degree of the vacuum layer exceeds 3Pa, the insulation layer should be re-evacuated to ensure the vacuum degree of the insulation layer and enhance the insulation effect.


1.4 Vacuum Insulation Panel System


VV vacuum vent, selecting CF-40 with DN 40, used for vacuuming, closes VV when the vacuum level reaches the required standard, maintaining the sandwich vacuum level.


1.5 Level Measurement System


Extracted from both the top and bottom of the cylinder, the top section is the vapor phase and the bottom section is the liquid phase, connected together by the level gauge valve. L1 Level Gauge Valve PS×Z-1, the vapor side connects to the pressure gauge valve and pressure gauge, with a liquid level measurement range of 0 to 6 meters of water column.


6.6 Full Mouth Measurement


Install the pipeline according to the set liquid level. When the liquid level reaches the set value, it flows downward through the pipe to the fill valve MV. When filling, this valve opens until liquid starts to flow, indicating the tank is full. Close the valve. Use a 32gDA10C valve, size: DN20 PN4.0.


1.7 Self-Pressurizing System


The booster valve V1 is connected to the booster PBC-1, which uses CFB03-00. It vaporizes a portion of the liquid flowing from the tank, introducing it into the inner tank, thereby increasing the pressure inside. The liquid is then discharged under the pressure.


1.8 Gas Venting System


When the pressure at the top of the container increases, gas is expelled through the pipeline and passes through the vent valve E1, then to a check valve CV. Since gas can only exit, a check valve is used to prevent backflow. Therefore, a flame arrester is connected after the check valve, as gas release upon contact with air can cause sparks. The flame arrester is designed to prevent sparks from entering the inner tank with the gas, which could ignite and cause an explosion.
