The Functions of Different Parts of an LNG Tank


Outer Canister: Protects the inner canister and the insulation material between the inner and outer canisters, forming a vacuum between them to enhance the insulation performance of the material. The outer canister completely seals off any leakage of liquid and vapor, ensuring storage safety.


Inner Tank: Primarily used for storing LNG, but due to the extremely low-temperature characteristics of LNG, the materials and manufacturing requirements for the tank are very strict. Inlet and outlet pipes: Pay attention to the length of the upward inlet pipe, which is nearly the same as the inner tank. The inlet pipes in the storage tank use a combination nozzle and porous tube, allowing newly injected LNG to mix thoroughly with the existing LNG. LNG is transported to the gas station from the LNG liquefaction plant via road tankers or tank container trucks. During unloading, to prevent an increase in pressure within the LNG storage tank from affecting unloading speed, the upward feeding method is used when the LNG temperature in the tanker is lower than that in the storage tank. The low-temperature LNG in the tanker is sprayed into the storage tank through the upward feeding pipe nozzle in a spray form, cooling some of the gas to a liquid state and reducing the tank pressure, facilitating smooth unloading. If the LNG temperature in the tanker is higher than that in the storage tank, the downward feeding method is employed. The high-temperature LNG enters the storage tank through the downward feeding inlet, mixing with the low-temperature LNG inside to cool down and prevent the high-temperature LNG from evaporating through the upward feeding inlet, which could increase the tank pressure and make unloading difficult. In actual operations, since the LNG gas source is usually farther from the cities consuming the gas, when transported over long distances to consuming cities, the LNG temperature in the tanker is typically higher than that in the storage tank at the gasification station, necessitating the use of the downward feeding method. Therefore, except for the first time of LNG filling, the downward feeding method is generally used during normal unloading procedures.


Safety Valve: When the pressure inside the storage tank exceeds the set pressure of the safety valve (also known as the working pressure), the safety valve will automatically open to release excess gas and stabilize the pressure. The set pressure of the safety valve is generally 1.04-1.1 times the operating pressure of the pressure vessel, while the reset pressure is 0.8 times the operating pressure of the vessel.


Safety Valve Terminology: The nominal pressure of a safety valve indicates the maximum allowable pressure under normal temperature conditions. For safety valves used in high-temperature equipment, the reduction in allowable stress of the material under high temperature should not be considered. Safety valves are designed and manufactured according to nominal pressure standards.


Setpoint Pressure: Also known as the adjusting pressure, it is the pressure of the medium when the safety valve disc starts to lift under operating conditions. Discharge Pressure: The pressure on the inlet side when the valve disc reaches the specified opening height.


Seat Pressure: The inlet pressure when the valve seat is re-seated after the safety valve discharge, and the medium stops flowing. Seat pressure is an important parameter indicating the quality of the safety valve's use, generally requiring it to be at least 80% of the working pressure, with the upper limit set to prevent frequent valve disc oscillation.


Open/Closing Pressure Difference: The difference between the opening pressure and the return seat pressure.


External Shell Bursting Disc: Designed to prevent leakage at the connection root between the inner tank and the pipeline, which could lead to increased pressure in the sandwich layer and potentially cause the external shell to explode. The bursting disc is installed to relieve pressure promptly, thereby protecting the storage tank.


Differential Pressure Level Gauges: The differential pressure level gauge is commonly used in LNG storage tanks.

The operational pressure of the low-temperature LNG storage tank is 0.6-1.44 MPa, with an operational temperature of -162°C. (Available in vertical or horizontal designs) The LNG storage tank is composed of two layers—inner and outer. To minimize external heat transfer to the tank, a vacuum-insulation panel made of diatomite is used between the layers to isolate it from the atmosphere. This prevents the influence of atmospheric pressure or temperature changes and the entry of humid air into the insulation layer between the inner and outer tanks, effectively ensuring and enhancing the performance of the insulation material.
