3. LNG Tank Fault Inspection and Treatment 3.1 Daily Inspection

3.1.1  Are the level gauges and pressure gauges functioning properly?

3.1.2 Are the shut-off valves, regulating valves, and safety valves in normal working condition?

3.1.3 Tank, pipeline, and valve leaks inspection.

3.2 Regular inspections

3.2.1 Pressure gauges should be calibrated annually and accompanied by a test certificate with a lead seal.

3.2.2 The safety valve should be calibrated annually and sealed with lead.

3.2.3   Low-temperature liquids should be analyzed every three to six months as required for operation.

4. Cautionary Notes

4.1 The vacuum valve is sealed before the product is shipped out. Upon delivery to the user's site, the user must ensure to protect all pipeline valves during installation, particularly the vacuum valve, and strictly prohibit any collision or opening of the vacuum valve.

4.2 Do not empty the liquid in the storage tank unless it is for an extended period, as this can cause the inner cylinder to overheat, necessitating additional cooling when refilling, leading to unnecessary losses.

4.3 Low-temperature liquid storage tanks are used for storing liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, and liquid argon. However, when switching to another liquid, the original liquid must be completely emptied and purged before refilling with the new liquid.

Note:

1. The measuring full valve opens when the liquid is almost full, closes when liquid starts to flow, and stops the inflow. When filling for the first time, it should be filled from the top first, followed by the bottom.

2. Open during waste liquid discharge.

3. Release the vent valve when the container pressure is too high.

4. The container automatically opens when over-pressurized. Normally, only one is used. If the working one fails, the other is immediately activated to ensure the safe operation of the storage tank. The damaged safety valve is then repaired and inspected, and upon passing, it is promptly reinstalled.

5. The inner cylinder automatically starts upon opening the boost valve when the pressure boost is required.

6. The level gauge is usually turned off during normal operation.

7. Burst upon overpressure; must be replaced immediately if bursting occurs.

LNG tanks are atmospheric pressure, low-temperature, large capacity storage vessels, typically with a flat bottom and double-walled cylindrical design. The inner cylinder is usually made of 9% nickel alloy steel, but can also be constructed from all aluminum, stainless steel foil, or pre-stressed concrete. The outer wall is made of carbon steel or pre-stressed concrete. The suspended insulating support platform at the top of the wall is aluminum, while the tank roof is made of carbon steel or concrete. The main insulating materials inside the LNG tank include expanded perlite, elastic glass fiber felt, and foam glass bricks.

LNG Tank Characteristics Requirements

Low-temperature resistance

The boiling point of liquefied natural gas at atmospheric pressure is -162°C. Therefore, LNG storage tanks must have excellent low-temperature resistance and superior insulation properties.

(2) High safety requirements

Due to the storage of low-temperature liquids inside the tank, in the event of an accident, the refrigerated liquid would volatilize in large quantities, with the vaporization amount being approximately 625 times that of the refrigerated state, forming an explosive mixture in the atmosphere. Therefore, it is required that the tank be constructed with a double-walled structure and utilize the containment concept. In the event of a leak in the first layer of the tank, the second layer can completely contain the leaked liquid and the evaporated gas, ensuring storage safety.

(3) Special material.

The inner tank must be capable of withstanding low temperatures and is made of austenitic stainless steel, while the outer cylinder is constructed from Q345R ordinary low-carbon alloy steel plate.

(4) Insulation measures are stringent.

Due to the maximum temperature difference between inside and outside the tank reaching up to 200℃, the tank must have excellent insulation properties to maintain an internal temperature of -160℃. High-performance insulation materials should be filled between the inner and outer shells. The insulation material at the bottom of the tank must also have sufficient load-bearing capacity. (5) Good seismic performance

General building seismic requirements are to crack under specified earthquake loads but not collapse. To ensure the safety of storage tanks under unexpected loads, they must possess excellent seismic performance. Ensure that the tank body remains undamaged under the given seismic intensity. (6) Strict construction requirements

The tank welds must undergo 100% magnetic particle testing (MT) and 100% vacuum leak testing (VBT). Strict selection of insulation materials is required, and the prescribed procedures must be followed during construction.
