The beacon plays a crucial role in supporting navigation, fisheries, and marine development. The China Marine Administration implements unified management and maintenance of coastal beacons in our country. River beacons are constructed, managed, and maintained by waterway management institutions under the traffic administration department. As of 2007, the total number of beacons reached 5,096. With the development of shipping, natural landmarks such as mountains and islands gradually fail to meet the needs of vessel navigation, leading to the gradual development of beacons. Beacons are set up in navigable waters and their vicinity to indicate channels, anchorages, navigational hazards, shoals, and serve as positioning and turning markers, among other uses. They also transmit signals, such as indicating water depth, forecasting weather conditions, and commanding traffic in narrow waterways. The location, characteristics, light quality, and signals of beacons are recorded in beacon tables and nautical charts published by various countries. Modern beacons are mainly divided into two categories: sea area beacons and river beacons.
