Composite insulators consist of three parts: an insulating core rod, a silicone rod with a rubber sheath, and the connecting hardware at both ends.

Insulating core rod is a short term for epoxy resin glass fiber drawing rod. It serves as the skeleton of composite insulators, supporting the hood, inner insulation, connecting fittings at both ends, and bearing mechanical loads, among other functions. It boasts a high tensile strength, usually exceeding 600 MPa, which is twice that of ordinary steel and 5 to 8 times that of ceramic materials. It also exhibits excellent dielectric properties, resistance to chemical erosion, and good resistance to bending fatigue, creep, and impact. The silicone rubber hood primarily protects the core rod, shields against rain and snow, increases the creepage distance, and enhances the product's external insulation. It is made from a polymerized silicone rubber matrix, supplemented by flame retardants, anti-aging agents, coupling agents, and other fillers, through high-temperature and high-pressure vulcanization. It has excellent hydrophobicity and migration properties, as well as good resistance to corrosion, aging, and electrical insulation. It also features a high flashover voltage and resistance to fragmentation, with a uniform voltage distribution. Compared to ceramic materials, its flashover voltage under the same conditions is more than twice that of ceramic.

The composite insulator exhibits excellent resistance to brittleness and strong vibration resistance, preventing brittle fracture accidents.

The composite insulator is interchangeable and can be used in place of porcelain and other insulators.
