What does it mean to have an IP65 waterproof grade full metal industrial keyboard?

Many people may have heard of the IP65 waterproof rating, but few truly understand what IP65 really means. Today, let's discuss what exactly "IP65" is all about?

IP65 is an abbreviation for Ingress Protection. The IP rating refers to the degree of protection provided by the外壳 of electrical equipment against foreign objects. For instance, explosion-proof electrical equipment and waterproof/dustproof electrical equipment. This standard originates from the IEC 60529, a standard adopted by the电工委员会. In 2004, it was also adopted as the American National Standard.

Above, as you have seen, "The IP rating is a measure of the degree of protection provided by the electrical equipment housing against foreign bodies." Therefore, the IP65 standard is not only a single waterproof rating, but also involves the dust protection rating. Within this standard, the format for the IP rating for the protection of electrical equipment housing against foreign bodies is IPXX, where XX are two Arabic numerals indicating the contact protection and foreign body protection ratings (dust protection).

Please refer to the table below for specific protection levels. The higher the number, the better the protection level.

Dust Protection Level (indicated by IPXX)

Level 0: No Protection

Level 1: Prevent large solid particles from entering

Level 2: Prevent medium-sized solid particles from entering

Level 3: Prevent Small Solids from Entering

Level 4: Prevent solids larger than 1mm from entering

Level 5: Prevent harmful dust accumulation

Level 6: Prevent Dust Ingress

Waterproof Rating (the 2nd X denotes)

Level 0: No Protection

No impact on the shell when water droplets fall in.

Level 2: Water or rain dripping at a 15-degree angle onto the shell has no effect.

Level 3: Water or rain dripping at a 60-degree angle onto the shell has no effect.

Level 4: No effect from splashing water from any angle.

Level 5: No impact from low-pressure jet at any angle.

6th Level: No Impact from High-Pressure Water Jetting

Level 7: Resistant to immersion in water for short periods (15cm-1m, within half an hour)

Level 8: Long-term immersion under pressure

As shown in the table above, it is evident that IP65 equals IP6 (prevents dust from entering) and IP5 (no effect from low-pressure jets at any angle).
