Talcum powder's benefits and effects
2023-10-23
What is Talcum Powder?
Talc, with the chemical formula Mg3[Si4O10](OH)2 or 3MgO•4SiO2•H2O, contains 31.72% MgO, 63.52% SiO2, and 4.76% H2O. Talc is known for being one of the softer minerals and gives a lubricating sensation. Its Mohs hardness is 1, while calcite has a hardness of 3. Commercial talc products are harder than pure talc due to the presence of impurities like calcite and actinolite.
Section II: Physical Properties of Gypsum
Unrefined talc comes in a variety of colors, including white, gray, yellow, blue, light green, pink, brown, and more. Once crushed, all types of talc turn into a powder ranging from gray to white, with varying degrees of solid luster. Due to the unique, sheet-like structure of talc, when evenly distributed in resins, it acts like a metallic reinforcing material added to cement products, offering excellent mechanical properties. It is considered an reinforcing material, which sets it apart from other granular minerals.
Three, Main Production Areas of Talc Currently, the main distribution of talc powder in China is in the area around Guilin, Guangxi, Qixia and Laizhou in the Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong, and Haicheng area in Liaoning. Due to different mineral sources, the performance and structure of talc varies. Through comparative application tests, the talc from Guangxi has excellent transparency and processing properties. The talc powder from the Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong has a lower SiO2 content, good brightness, but poor transparency. The talc powder from Haicheng, Liaoning, is rich in mineral resources, moderately priced, and offers a variety of types. However, with many types of talc powder and different mineral sources, as well as varying processing technologies, it is essential to select talc powder with different specifications and indicators based on the specific application. The SiO2 content in talc powder affects its performance (see the table below).
Four, The Role of Talc in Plastics - Talc is an important inorganic material for plastic filling and modification. It is widely used for polypropylene modification both domestically and internationally, primarily for producing auto parts, front and rear bumpers, dashboard panels, interior decorative panels, and more. It is also utilized in the home appliance industry, such as for washing machine parts, air conditioner parts, TV backs, electric heater casings, and various daily-use home appliance casings.
Talc is affordably priced and suitable as a filler, while its high aspect ratio (the average diameter of the particles to their thickness) and flake-like structure make it ideal as a reinforcing agent (improving the mechanical properties of the compound). Commercial talc used in plastics is a finely milled product with a thin flake structure.
Talc powder is widely used, featuring the following characteristics: ①Particle Size and Shape: Most talc products used as fillers are finely ground. The crystalline shape of talc can be sheet-like (laminar), leaf-like (broadleaf), needle-like, or blocky. In China, the particle shape of talc produced is predominantly sheet-like. The aspect ratio, which is the average diameter to thickness ratio of sheet-like particles, is an important indicator for talc. ②Surface Properties: Talc exhibits different surface properties depending on its source. Product fineness affects specific surface area and oil absorption rate. Other factors influencing these properties include surface roughness, particle shape, and pore volume. Generally, due to its sheet-like structure, talc has a large specific surface area. ③Electrical and Thermal Properties: Talc is an electrical non-conductor and can be applied in the production of high-frequency electrical insulating materials. It remains stable at high temperatures up to 900°C. Talc has low thermal conductivity and high thermal shock resistance. Under heating conditions, talc loses some structural water without altering its optical or crystalline properties. When the temperature exceeds 800°C, talc loses its combined crystalline water and decomposes into顽辉石 through endothermic reactions. ④Optical Properties: Pure talc has three refractive indices, X=1.539, Y=1.589, Z=1.589, and it has a small and variable optical axis angle. Therefore, when talc is used in agricultural greenhouse films, it can alter the direction of sunlight, converting direct light into scattered light, enhancing the film's insulation effect.
