The elevator compensating chain is a component used to connect the elevator's car to the counterweight, balancing the weight of the traction rope and trailing cables, and playing a balancing role in the elevator's operation.

During elevator operation, the length of the steel cables on the car side and counterweight side continuously changes, thereby altering the weight of the cables on both sides of the traction wheel. When the elevator is lifting to a relatively low height, this weight change has a minimal impact on the operational performance. However, once the lift exceeds a certain height, it can severely affect the stability of the elevator's operation, posing a risk to passenger safety. In such cases, it is necessary to install an elevator balance compensating chain of a certain weight to balance the weight difference caused by height variations.

Common types of compensation chains available on the market include:

  1. Wrapped Fiber Compensation ChainWith a speed capability of up to 4m/s, it can be used in various harsh cold environments and is currently one of the better performance compensating chains, although it comes at a higher price.

  2. All-plastic compensating chainThe cable-type PVC structure boasts a speed capability of up to 3m/s, ensuring a smooth and silent operation, which has garnered the preference of numerous large elevator companies.

  3. Coated Compensating ChainThe flat-shaped PVC structure is suitable for speeds up to 2m/s, with performance slightly inferior to full-plastic compensation chains but superior to rope-through compensation chains, and is relatively affordable in price.

  4. Rope Compensation ChainThe structure involves threading sisal rope through a steel chain, which is typically used for speeds below 1m/s. When in use, the elevator generates significant noise, and occupants experience a noticeable vibration within the car. This is an original type of compensating chain, which is now less commonly used by most elevator companies. They have shifted to using the aforementioned three types of compensating chains instead.

When using the elevator compensating chain, please note the following points:

  1. Select the appropriate compensation chain type: Choose the suitable compensation chain type based on factors such as the elevator's operating speed, lifting height, and usage environment, to ensure its proper functioning and meet the stability and safety requirements of elevator operation.

  2. Ensure the Quality of Compensation Chains: High-quality compensation chains ensure safe and smooth elevator operation, achieving a silent and comfortable experience. Poor-quality compensation chains may lead to severe vibrations during operation, causing car摇晃 and excessive noise, as well as a short lifespan, poor flexibility, easily cracked outer sheath, low strength, and instability, which can easily result in chain breakage accidents. When selecting compensation chains, choose products that meet standards and are reliable in quality.

  3. Proper Installation of Compensation Chains: The installation of compensation chains typically occurs during elevator commissioning, with one end suspended below the car and the other attached to the counterweight below. This method is known as symmetrical compensation, as it does not require increasing the counterweight's weight or the hoistway's space. Care must be taken to ensure the correct length of the compensation chain during installation; it should not be too long or too short, and the ends must be securely fastened.

  4. Regular Inspections and Maintenance: The compensating chain may experience wear, deformation, or breakage over long-term use, necessitating regular inspections. The checks include examining the appearance of the compensating chain for any damage, twists, or breaks; ensuring the integrity of the connection points; and looking for any abnormal noises or vibrations during operation. If any issues are found, they should be addressed promptly with repairs or replacements.

  5. Be mindful of environmental factors: Avoid contact between the compensation chain and substances like water and oil to prevent accelerated corrosion and aging. Additionally, ensure the cleanliness of the elevator shaft to prevent debris from entangling or scratching the compensation chain.

  6. Adhere to Relevant Standards and Regulations: In the selection, installation, and maintenance of the compensation chain, it is essential to strictly follow the relevant national and industry standards and regulations, as well as the requirements of the elevator manufacturer.

  7. Secondary protection for compensating chains: Set up a secondary protection device for compensating chains as required by the elevator manufacturer to prevent more severe accidents from occurring in case of abnormal situations (such as detachment).

In summary, the correct selection, installation, and maintenance of elevator compensating chains are crucial for ensuring the safety and smooth operation of elevators. By paying attention to the aforementioned usage points, the quality of elevator operation can be improved, the lifespan of the compensating chains extended, and passenger safety and comfort ensured. Additionally, it is recommended to have professional elevator maintenance personnel perform regular inspections and maintenance work.
