In April 2019, a large number of sellers' listings were flagged by the system as pesticide products, including unrelated categories such as office supplies, landscaping, beauty, pets, luggage, and kitchenware, which were consequently removed from the shelves.
Background of EPA RegistrationFebruary 15, 2018, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Amazon reached a resolution agreement regarding the distribution of over 2,000 unregistered and unlabeled pesticide products from 2013 to 2016. Under the agreement, Amazon will pay a $1,215,700 civil penalty and take measures to regulate and remove illegal products from its platform.
Since then, Amazon has intensified its regulatory efforts to address significant non-compliance risks found in pesticide/pesticide equipment products. Starting from June 2018, the company has mandated the removal of non-compliant pesticides/pesticide equipment from its platform until the products meet compliance requirements, at which point they can resume sales.
In January 2019, Amazon officially implemented new rules to regulate sellers on the platform, requiring that sellers of pesticide products must be U.S. citizens.
