UL Introduces
UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inc., a renowned and substantial independent, non-profit organization dedicated to public safety in the United States and globally. It employs scientific testing methods to assess the potential hazards and levels of risk associated with various materials, devices, products, equipment, and buildings. UL is committed to establishing, writing, and issuing standards and resources that help reduce and prevent losses to life and property, along with conducting field research. Primarily, it specializes in product safety testing and providing safety certifications, aiming to contribute to the market's availability of goods with high safety standards and to ensure the health and safety of individuals and property. As a means to eliminate technical barriers in international trade, UL plays a proactive role in promoting the development of global trade.
UL was founded in 1894, initially relying on the fire insurance department for funding until it became fully independent in 1916. Over nearly a century of development, UL has become a globally recognized testing organization, boasting a comprehensive and stringent organizational management system, standard development, and product testing procedures. Managed by a board of directors composed of representatives from safety experts, consumers, the educational sector, utilities, the insurance industry, and the standards department, UL's day-to-day operations are handled by the President and Vice Presidents. Currently, UL has five laboratories in the United States, with headquarters located in the Northbrook town in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and has also established corresponding laboratories on the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
Battery UL Certification
Batteries often require UL certification before entering the U.S. market, even though the certification is voluntary. However, U.S. Customs allows goods with the "UL" mark to pass through, while those without must undergo a complex inspection process. Moreover, in the event of safety accidents, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) uses UL standards as a basis for judgment. Therefore, many sellers in the U.S. refuse to sell products without the "UL" mark to avoid complications. Batteries, as components of electrical products, entering the U.S. market must undergo UL certification.
Battery UL Certified Product Range
Lithium Batteries (sets), Backup Batteries (sets), Residential and Commercial Batteries (sets)
Battery UL Certification Test Standards
UL 1642 Lithium-ion (Battery Pack) Standard
UL2054 Residential and Commercial Batteries (Units)
Note:
The UL 1642 is a safety specification standard for lithium-ion cells first released by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (also known as UL, the United States Safety Testing Laboratory Company) in October 1985. It is an internationally recognized authoritative standard for evaluating the safety and reliability of lithium-ion cells under various fault conditions. It primarily targets cells (cells).
UL2054 primarily targets lithium-ion battery packs or modules. It applies to batteries used as power sources in products, including primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) batteries. These batteries can be composed of single electrochemical cells or multiple lithium-ion batteries, which convert chemical energy into electrical energy through chemical reactions, either in parallel or series configurations.
Battery UL Certification Application Documents
UL2054 certification requires submission of the following document files, provided that the battery cell has already obtained UL1642 certification.
Battery, Cell Specifications
2. Specifications and information for key battery components (such as MOS, IC, PTC, NTC, PCM, protective devices, etc.)
UL 1642 certification document for battery cells
4. Insulating components such as plastic shells, tapes, wires, and PCBs must have UL certification.
02 The following documents are required for the UL 1642 certification:
Battery cell qualification certificates, cathode and anode material specifications, electrolyte specifications, separator specifications, specifications for aluminum-plastic film or aluminum shell, etc.
Lithium-ion Battery UL Certification Testing Program
Test Project: Short Circuit Test (BE-1000A or BE-1000W)
Test Conditions: Short-circuit the battery at room temperature and 60℃±2℃ using wires with a resistance less than 100 milliohms, under full charge conditions.
Experiment Requirements: Battery must not explode or catch fire
Battery Test Reaction: No explosion, no fire. Electolyte leakage observed.
02 Test Project: Overcharge Test
Test Conditions: The battery is charged at a constant current and voltage of 3C, 10V under full charge conditions. Charging is switched to constant voltage once the current reaches 100mA, and continues for 48 hours.
Experiment Requirement: Battery must not explode or catch fire.
Battery Test Reaction: Battery bulged, with liquid leakage. No explosion, no fire.
Test Project: Compression Test (BE-6045 Battery Compression Tester)
Test Conditions: A force of 13kN is applied to the two pistons with a diameter of 32mm on the battery side under full charge until the pressure on the pistons reaches 17.2MP.
Battery must not catch fire or explode.
Battery Experiment Reaction: Severe deformation of the battery, increased battery temperature to 147℃, no explosion or fire occurred, with electrolyte leakage.
Test Project: Thermal Shock Test (BE-101 Series Thermal Shock Test Chamber)
Test Conditions: At full charge, the temperature in the high-temperature chamber increases by 5°C per minute, and the temperature reaches 150°C, then is maintained for 10 minutes.
Experiment Requirements: Battery must not explode or catch fire.
Battery Test Results: A total of 15 batteries were tested (10Ah - 10, 7.5Ah - 5), with no reaction from any of the batteries. According to the testing engineer, it is difficult for many manufacturers' batteries, whether small or large capacity, to pass this test, and the experiment carries certain risks.
Test Project: Impact Test (BE-5066 Battery Impact Tester)
Test Conditions: Under full charge, place a 15.8mm diameter steel rod on the battery, with an object weighing 9.1kg dropped from a height of 61cm onto the rod.
Experiment Requirements: Battery must not explode or catch fire.
Battery Test Reaction: The batteries deformed, with the battery surface becoming concave, and the battery temperature began to rise. Two of the 15 batteries reached 124°C, but there was no explosion or fire. The other batteries had temperatures ranging from 35°C to 82°C.
