Definition of an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS)
The Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS), commonly referred to as the "vertical warehouse," typically consists of several, a dozen, or even several dozen stories of shelves for storing goods. These warehouses utilize corresponding material handling equipment for the incoming and outgoing operations of goods. Due to their efficient use of space for storage, they are often metaphorically termed "vertical warehouses."
Automated Vertical Storage, also known as Automated Vertical Warehouse, is a new concept in logistics storage that achieves rationalization of high-rise storage, automated retrieval, and simplified operation: It represents the most advanced level of current technology. The main components of an automated vertical warehouse include shelves, aisle stacker cranes, loading (unloading) platforms, and automatic loading (unloading) and control systems. The shelves are structures made of steel or reinforced concrete, with standardized storage spaces inside. Aisle stacker cranes navigate through the aisles between the shelves to perform storage and retrieval tasks. Computer and barcode technology are used for management.
The Characteristics of the Vertical Warehouse
1. Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are typically quite tall. Their height usually ranges above 5 meters, with some reaching up to 40 meters. Common AS/RS systems are generally between 7 to 25 meters in height.
2. A立体warehouse is inevitably a mechanized warehouse. As the shelves are above 5 meters, manual operations for loading and unloading are no longer feasible, hence mechanical operation is necessary. The automated warehouse within a three-dimensional warehouse represents a high level of current technology.
Layered racking is configured in the automated storage and retrieval system. Due to the height of the racks, it is also referred to as a high-bay warehouse.
