An elliptical head, also known as an elliptic head or ellipsoidal head, is a type of head consisting of two parts: a rotating elliptical spherical surface and a cylindrical straight section. An elliptical head with a long-to-short axis ratio of 2.0, known as a standard elliptical head, is commonly used. The mechanical properties of the elliptical head are second only to those of the hemispherical head but superior to those of the dish head. As the elliptical head lies between the hemispherical and dish heads, the requirements for stamping equipment and molds, as well as the manufacturing difficulty, are also between the two, meaning it is easier than the hemispherical head but more difficult than the dish head. Due to its comprehensive performance, the elliptical head is widely used in medium and low-pressure vessels. In recent years, the adoption of the spinning forming process has facilitated the manufacturing of large-diameter elliptical heads.
