Deicing salts are a must-have for any contractor, and everyone knows that rock salt is great, but it's not suitable for every situation. Just like when faced with an ice storm followed by extremely cold temperatures, you need something that can penetrate the ice layer today, not when the weather warms up. That's where a lot of commercial deicing salts come into play.
High-quality commercial deicing salts are often referred to as "hot melt." Unlike traditional hot melt, it releases heat, requiring no external heat source to melt ice. It generates its own energy, meaning it can operate at much lower temperatures and effectively prevent icing.
Rock salt won't disappear anytime soon. The inexpensive cost of obtaining large quantities of rock salt makes it the primary weapon for deicing and tackling snow. When temperatures plummet, about 80% of the ice melts with the use of rock salt and 20% of other substances, such as magnesium chloride deicers. This helps to reduce costs, while magnesium chloride initiates the melting process, and rock salt completes the job.
