For fruit tree farmers, selecting the right fruit tree seedlings is the foundation for a bountiful orchard. However, there are many issues to consider when purchasing fruit tree seedlings:

Be mindful of selecting suitable local tree species.

No matter what kind of fruit tree, there is a distinction between its native region and suitable growing area. Generally speaking, to achieve good economic benefits, it is advisable to choose fruit trees that are suitable for the local environment.

Please select varieties suitable for the local climate conditions.

Diverse fruit trees vary in their cold resistance, depending on their species. Different regions also exhibit varying degrees of cold and warmth. Therefore, when selecting fruit tree seedlings, one should first consider the cold resistance of the species, followed by factors such as fruit size, quality, productivity, storage durability, and so on. It is crucial not to solely pursue large fruit and excellent quality at the expense of the tree's (species') cold resistance.

III. Pay Attention to Seedling Standards

Apple, pear, plum, persimmon seedlings should be between 80-140 cm in height with a thickness of 0.7-1.0 cm; peach and apricot seedlings should be 60-100 cm tall with a thickness of 0.4-0.8 cm; grape seedlings should have three or more full, plump buds. Various fruit tree seedlings should have four or more lateral roots around 18 cm in length, along with a high number of fibrous roots.

Four: Pay attention to the quality of seedlings.

Whether purchasing fruit tree seedlings in autumn or spring, it's best to avoid buying those in pots. Opt for seedlings directly lifted from the nursery or select newly harvested seedlings from the market.

V. Check for any pest or disease issues.

Buyer beware: Avoid planting stock with gypsy moth cocoons, winter larvae of the apple tree caterpillar, or egg masses of the Eastern tent caterpillar. Do not purchase apples, pears, or plums with root cancer.

Six, check for frost damage on seedlings.

Improper wintering of seedlings can lead to frost damage, with branches breaking and the cut ends turning brown, indicating severe frost. Such seedlings have low survival rates and are not recommended for purchase.

Section 7: Check for root rot.

When winterizing seedlings, excessive density or early planting can lead to mildew in the roots. Normal root surfaces are fresh with a white cross-section; mildewed roots have a brown or dark brown surface that breaks away upon touch.

Note: Check if the seedlings have lost moisture.

Normal seedling branches are round, with green cross-sections and a soft, cool feel. Dehydrated seedling branches become皱缩, featuring white cross-sections and a rigid, upright texture. The survival rate of seedlings is significantly affected, with severely dehydrated ones often unable to survive.
