What are the differences between high-speed, medium-speed, and slow-speed wire cutting?

High-speed, medium-speed, and low-speed wire-cutting all refer to the Wire-cut Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) machine—a type of numerical control machining center that can erode metal and complete the cutting task of workpieces. On another level, it can also be said that high-speed, medium-speed, and low-speed wire-cutting are metal wire materials and metal discharge erosion processing.


High-Speed Wire Cutting is a uniquely Chinese-developed electrical discharge wire cutting processing method. The electrode wire typically used in High-Speed Wire Cutting is molybdenum wire. Mid-Speed Wire Cutting, an upgraded version of High-Speed Wire Cutting, or a derivative thereof, also employs molybdenum wire for its electrode wire.


1. The wire feeding speed. The high-speed wire feeding has a speed of 2.5m/s or more, with a common value ranging from 6 to 10m/s, while the slow-speed wire electrical discharge machining has a speed of less than or equal to 2.5m/s, with a common value between 0.25 and 0.001m/s.


2. Electrode Wire Operating Status. The high-speed wire-cutting machine tool uses reciprocating wire feeding, which is reusable. The slow-speed wire-cutting machine tool operates in one direction, used only once.


3. Electrode Wire Materials: The electrode wire material for high-speed wire-cutting machine tools is made of molybdenum wire and tungsten-molybdenum alloy, while for slow-speed wire-cutting, it is made of brass, copper, or electrode wires primarily composed of copper alloys or coated materials.


4. Work fluid. The work fluid for high-speed wire cutting machines is emulsion or water-based, while for slow-speed wire cutting machines, it is deionized water, with kerosene used in some cases.


5. Precision. The precision of slow wire can reach 0.1um. Precision wise, slow wire is superior to medium wire, which in turn is better than fast wire. The precision of fast wire machine processing is not as good as medium wire. The surface roughness of fast wire products is also较差.


6. Cut Surface Smoothness: Fast silk has poor smoothness, medium silk is in the middle, and slow silk has high smoothness.
