In the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose industry, we are all aware of the product's broad range of applications. Among them, the application in latex paint may not be as well-known. Therefore, to understand its processing characteristics and usage properties in latex paint, the following introduction is provided.

1. Carboxymethyl cellulose, as a water-retaining agent in coatings, controls and adjusts the rheological properties of coatings, enhancing their water retention value to prevent the migration of water-soluble adhesives. Additionally, its excellent film-forming properties make the coating particularly suitable for membrane transfer and scraper coating during sizing and pressing. It is also more beneficial in overcoming scratches caused by metering rods or scrapers, resulting in a smooth and even coating surface. This prevents the "orange peel" effect, endowing the coating with excellent optical properties, opacity, sufficient surface strength, and a good K&N value.

2. It is also extensively used as an auxiliary adhesive in the coating operation of the papermaking industry, offering good adhesion. Each serving of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can replace 3-4 servings of modified starch or soybean casein, and 1.5-2.0 servings of latex, reducing the total adhesive content and benefiting the increase of binder solids in the paint.

3. Due to its rigid cellulose backbone, which results in a significant hydration volume in colloidal coatings, it is naturally considered as a thickener. As a thickener, cellulose polymer can affect the flocculation state of pigment particles, thereby influencing the structure and rheology of the coating. The aggregation of pigment particles also depends on the interaction behaviors among various components in the coating, such as pigments and adhesives, which is known as the association phenomenon between particles. Importantly, the adsorption of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose in coatings greatly affects the structure of the coating and the adhesive force between the coating colloids.

Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium, as a water-retaining agent, binder, and thickener in latex paint, is widely used. It effectively enhances its performance in latex paint, thereby promoting the development of related latex paint products.
