Lightning rod, also known as a lightning arrestor or rod, is a device used to protect buildings and tall trees from lightning strikes. A lightning rod is installed at the top of the protected object and connected to an earthed grounding grid underground using compliant wiring. The specifications of lightning rods must comply with national standards, and the required height specifications vary for each lightning protection category.
When lightning clouds discharge near the ground, they distort the ground's electric field. At the top of the lightning rod, a localized area of concentrated electric field is formed to influence the development direction of the lightning leader discharge, guiding the lightning to discharge onto the lightning rod, and then through the grounding downrods and grounding equipment, the lightning current is channeled into the earth, thereby protecting the object from lightning strikes.
