Five-strand cable guardrail

The Five-Layer Cable Barrier is a commonly used type of cable barrier, constructed with five strands of 3x7 galvanized/right-hand twist steel cables, which have high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. There are two methods for securing the cables: pin fixing (easier installation) and U-shaped clip fixing.

The end columns of the five-strand cable barrier are the main structures that bear the tension force of the cables and the impact force of out-of-control vehicles, consisting of a triangular support, a base plate, and a concrete foundation. The end structures can be of two types: embedded and assembled. The embedded end structure is integrated with the concrete foundation, with the depth of embedding of the end columns varying from 400 to 500mm depending on the category. The diagonal column of the triangular support forms a 45° angle with the ground, with a steel plate welded at the bottom to form a stable frame. Additionally, the steel plate at the bottom significantly increases the bonding force with the concrete foundation, and it is also easy to control the elevation position. The assembled end structure is integrated with the concrete foundation through pre-buried components, and the pre-buried components of the end structure differ due to different structures and categories. Grade A triangular supports use 6 M8 bolts, 600mm long, pre-buried anchor bolts, and 6 anchor bolts welded to the steel plate and angle iron to form a frame. This not only locates the position of the anchor bolts but also significantly enhances the bonding strength with the concrete.
The terminal structure is installed at the starting and ending points of the cable guardrail. To maintain the initial tension of the cable and simplify the tensioning equipment during installation, maintain a certain level of cable alignment to prevent deflection, and also for ease of maintenance, the cable installation length is generally set at 200-300 meters, meaning no single cable exceeds 300 meters in length.
(2) Intermediate End Pillars. For cable guardrails with installation lengths exceeding 200-300m, an intermediate end structure should be used. The intermediate end structure of roadside cable guardrails is triangular. The end pillars consist of a triangular bracket, a base plate, and a concrete foundation, with specific construction and dimensions for the end pillars.
