In-mold labeling is primarily used for blow molding and injection molding products made from materials such as PP, PE, and PET. This involves placing pre-printed in-mold labels into the mold cavity before blowing or injection molding. As the mold closes and the blowing or injection process occurs, the high temperature and pressure cause the special adhesive on the in-mold label to melt, fusing it with the bottle body or injection molded part's surface. Once the mold opens, a beautifully printed bottle or part is formed in one go. About one to two years before 2005, in-mold labeling was used in mainland China for anti-counterfeiting purposes. At the time, printing technology struggled to meet the standards for in-mold labels, and specialized injection molding machines were required. In 2009, most EU member states banned the import of melamine tableware, leading to a rapid development of in-mold labeling technology for PP material tableware. It was then that in-mold labeling products truly became integrated into people's lives.
